In the 1940s and 50s home audio systems went through a high-fidelity revolution. This is the period when the music recording industry and stereo manufacturers dramatically improved the audio experience for consumers. Technically it had to do with the improved audio capture, more sophisticated mastering (stereophonics), and dramatically improved reproduction of music, all at a reasonable cost. These advancements brought the listening experience closer to the quality of a live performance. This technical advancement in audio forever changed the music industry, leading to today’s near ubiquity of music over the Internet delivered by smartphones, Spotify, Pandora, and the like. High-fidelity music reproduction forever changed the music industry just like high-fidelity security systems are now revolutionizing IT security. A recently published report by industry analyst firm EMA, titled Achieving High-Fidelity Security Combining Network and Endpoint Monitoring with RSA Security Analytics and RSA ECAT, expounded on this theme. This report explains the importance of deep network and endpoint monitoring and the tremendous complementary power of using both capabilities closely integrated together to improve both detective as well as investigative fidelity. The ability to ingest, enrich, analyze, and investigate both packet and endpoint data together brings high-fidelity to security monitoring. One of the key conclusions that EMA made in this paper is: “Organizations need better information, analysis, and prioritization to identify and act on the most important security threats. Generally, organizations have relied on either endpoint or network-sourced security data to make decisions. But in order to have optimal situational awareness they really need the combination of network and endpoint security and the ability to enrich that data with metadata and use it for both detection and response. Only through this combination can organizations have all the information they need to effectively identify and respond to security threats.” While high-fidelity security systems won’t directly impact the lives of billions of people like high-fidelity audio has, indirectly all users of the Internet have a stake in improving online security, privacy, and trust. And just like the world of recorded music in the 40s and 50s, the IT security industry is on the cusp of an equally profound, high-fidelity enabled revolution.
