A 110 years ago, people made toast by holding bread over fire and repeatedly flipping it. It was inconvenient, labor-intensive, somewhat dangerous, and most importantly, it produced burnt toast. Then Mr. Edison came along. Electricity was applied and 80 years of innovation later, we achieved nirvana. We had reached the point where you could simply drop slices of bread into a device, press a button, and 60 seconds later, voila! Toast! Same outcome, vastly improved experience. I was reminded of this parable when Dell EMC announced the latest release of HYPERMAX and the availability of a feature called NDM (Non-Disruptive Migration). Over the past 18 months, Dell EMC Services has been aggressively modernizing the process of data migration, creating an approach we call Intelligent Data Mobility. Through investments in technology and service engineering, Intelligent Data Mobility has made data migrations faster, easier, less disruptive, and less expensive for our customers. And our latest technical capability, NDM, takes Intelligent Data Mobility to the next level. NDM is game-changing innovation that automates migration processes that were traditionally manual AND it reduces the labor and cost of a data migration by as much as 60%. But, more importantly, it allows customers to migrate data from a legacy VMAX array to a VMAX3 or VMAX All Flash Array, with ZERO interruption to applications and data availability. So customers realize much faster time-to-value, at a far lower cost, without disrupting their applications or their business! We aren’t quite to the point where we’ve made data migration as easy as making toast. At least not yet. But, investments in technical innovations like NDM are moving Intelligent Data Mobility (and our customers) much closer to that nirvana.
